2023 Atlantic Seasonal Hurricane Activity Forecast

The Colorado State University Tropical Weather and Climate Research Tropical Meteorology Project released the first formal 2023 Atlantic Seasonal Hurricane Activity forecast. It predicts the 2023 Atlantic basin hurricane season will have slightly below-average activity with a total of 13 named storms, six hurricanes, and two major hurricanes. Probabilities for a major (Category 3, 4, or 5) landfalling hurricane along the entire continental US coastline is 44% (the average over the last century is 43%). and are slightly higher on the Gulf coast (28%) than the East coast (22%). The probability for at least one major hurricane tracking through the Caribbean is 49% (the average over the last century is 47%). The Project will release its next forecast on June 1, 2023, and begin its two-week forecasts on August 3, 2023.
